Church of the Holy Sepulchre -the Syrian Chapel & 1st Century Tombs – Israel
The best evidence for the authenticity of this site is found in an area adjacent to the Syrian Chapel portion of the Holy Sepulchre Church. Here, a number of 1st Century tombs are found. These prove that the area was used as a burial ground.
This is a picture of the Syrian Chapel that must be passed through on the way to these tombs:
Archeologists have dated the tombs themselves to the 1st Century AD. These are fairly small and you have to crouch down to enter. They are really burial shafts and would have been used by the poor. Joseph of Arimathea was wealthy and based on the Gospel accounts, the size of the Lord’s Tomb would have been a good deal larger.
