2nd Law: Increasing Entropy

2nd Law: Law of Increasing Entropy – In all energy exchanges, if no energy enters or leaves the system, the potential energy of the state will always be less than that of the initial state.  Therefore, “Entropy” or the measure of disorder within the system is ever increasing

The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics may first be traced to a French physicist and military engineer named Sadi Carnot (1796 – 1832)

  • In 1824, he produced a paper called Reflections on the Motive Power of Fire in which he postulated that work results when heat is transferred from a hot to cold body, but that it is inefficient 1

Lord Kelvin (1824 – 1907) is the person most attributed with formulating the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics as he honed in on irreversible processes as it related to heat transfers 2

The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics states that “in all energy exchanges, if no energy enters or leaves the system, the potential energy of the state will always be less than that of the initial state.”

  • When energy in a closed system is converted from potential to kinetic, some energy is used up as heat and therefore doesn’t have complete efficiency in producing work 3

Increasing Entropy means increasing randomness and degradation

  • We know from the Law of Conservation of Mass that the total amount of mass remains unchanged
  • We also know from the Law of Conservation of Energy that the total amount of energy remains unchanged
  • However, the Law of Increasing Entropy means that the quality (not quantity) of mass and energy is deteriorating 4

In short, our universe is winding down…

  • If it is winding down, it must have been wound up
  • Within the Universe, everything goes toward increased randomness and disorder over time 5

The ramification of this is that our Universe can not be eternal!

  • Since this Universe is unable to produce energy or mass, it must have had a beginning.
  • Some other Source placed the energy and mass within this closed finite system that is our Time-Space-Matter Universe
  • Incidentally, this realization is why physicists spent the last century searching for an inception type event, like the Big Bang
  • They realize our Universe is not self-explanatory

Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish, but You will endure; yes, they will all grow old like a garment; like a cloak You will change them, and they will be changed.”            – Psalm 102: 25, 26

Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look on the earth beneath. For the heavens will vanish away like smoke, the earth will grow old like a garment, and those who dwell in it will die in like manner; but My salvation will be forever, and My righteousness will not be abolished.” – Isaiah 51: 6

The Psalmist is writing of a Universe that is winding down – it is growing old and decaying
Isaiah pens similar thoughts

The Bible in its view of the state of our Time-Space-Matter continuum is accurate when it comes to thermodynamics

For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.” – Romans 8: 20 – 22

The fact is that the Bible teaches that our world is fallen as a result of Mankind’s rebellion against God

When we sinned, we turned away from the Life Giver and Life Sustainer

We turned from the One Who brought order out of chaos, the One Who brought forth matter and energy ex nihio – “out of nothing”

The result of this sin is death, decay, and destruction upon the very Universe of which we were to be caretakers

Paul’s letter to the Romans speaks of a Creation that awaits the day of its deliverance
