1st Law: Conservation of Energy

1st Law: Conservation of Energy – There is no new energy being created within our time-space-matter universe. The total amount energy in the universe remains constant – it is merely changing from one form to another

The 1st Law of Thermodynamics was formulated over the first 50 years or so of the 1800’s

  • German physicist Rudolf Clausius (1822 – 1888) is considered one of the central founders to the overall field
    • In 1850, he establishes the basis for the 1st Law of Thermodynamics:
    • Simply put, thermodynamics has established that “energy can be changed from one form to another, but it cannot be created or destroyed.” – it simply changes form 1

Though energy can change from potential (energy waiting to be used) to kinetic (energy in use or in motion); there is no new energy being created 2

The Law of the Conservation of Energy is so closely related to the Law of the Conservation of Mass, that they are often stated together

The ramification of this is that our Universe was either created or it must necessarily be eternal!

  • If this universe is unable to create mass or energy, then we have only these two choices
  • However, the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics dictates that the Universe is not eternal, for it is winding down…this leaves just One Possibility

That which has been is what will be, that which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which it may be said, “See, this is new”? It has already been in ancient times before us.”              – Ecclesiastes 1: 9 – 10

I know that whatever God does, it shall be forever.  Nothing can be added to it.  And nothing taken from it.  God does it, that men should fear before Him.  That which already has been, and what is to be has already been;”                     – Ecclesiastes 3: 14, 15

You alone are the Lord; You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and everything on it, the seas and all that is in them, and You preserve them all. The host of heaven worships You.”                         – Nehemiah 9: 6

Solomon writes the words to Ecclesiastes @ 950 BC

  • His statements would seem to merely be yet another way of stating the Law of the Conservation of Energy
  • Nehemiah is scribing his words @ 440 BC

The Bible is accurate in its thermodynamics
