Wave Particle Duality of Light

wave-particle-duality-of-lightWhere is the way to thedwelling of light? And darkness, where is its place, that you may take it to its territory, that you may know the paths to its home?
– Job 38: 19 – 20

1.  We know from Quantum Mechanics that there is a Wave – Particle Duality to the nature of Light

  • In other words, Light exists at the same time as both a Particle and as a Wave 1

2.  The Bible uses some remarkable terminology here that may be inferring the Dual nature of Light as both a Wave and a Particle

3.  The Lord, in talking with Job, associates a “way” with Light

  • The term used for “way” is the Hebrew transliteration “derek” meaning a road, path, or direction
  • The idea here seems to involve one of movement 2

4.  The Lord also associates a “dwelling” with Light

  • The term used for “dwelling” is the Hebrew transliteration “shakan” meaning to abide, establish or reside
  • The idea here seems to be one of locality 3

5.  The passage’s nuances are conveying two separate ideas and yet ties them together at the same time

  • The “Way” of Light seems to be conveying the nature of Light as a Wave – in other words, it speaks to the idea of movement
  • The “Dwelling” of Light seems to be conveying the nature of Light as a Particle – in other words, it is locality that resides in a spot at a moment in time

6.  There is an amazing sophistication in the nuance of the language selected by Scripture to convey the nature of Light

  • Other passages carry similar thoughts to them…

cartoonThere are those who rebel against thelight; they do not know its ways nor abide in its paths.
– Job 24: 13

When He made a law for the rain, and apath for the thunderbolt,
– Job 28: 26

Can you send out lightnings, that they may go, and say to you, ‘Here we are!’?”
– Job 38: 35

7.  These texts as well seems to express ideas of the movement of Light as well as its abiding

  • Again, Wave and Particle ideas may be conveyed in a veiled kind of way
