Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

And the Angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Indeed now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you shall conceive and bear a son. Now therefore, please be careful not to drink wine or similar drink, and not to eat anything unclean.”  – Judges 13: 3 – 4

  1. In the Book of Judges it is conveyed that expectant mothers should stay away from alcohol.  This is exactly what modern health service professionals have found.
    • In context, the Angel is notifying Manoah and his wife that they are going to have a son
    • This son would turn out to be Samson and he would be used of the Lord to deliver the Israelites from the Philistines
    • A key part of this is that Samson is to be dedicated as a Nazirite – as such, he is to stay away from alcohol
    • Still, the advice given to Samson’s mother is valuable from the standpoint of prenatal care
  2. All sorts of research says you are taking a chance of hurting your unborn baby if you consume alcohol to any significant level
    • We do know that any regular level of alcohol consumption, can place the unborn baby at greater risk of suffering Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)
    • According to the Center for Disease Control, 1 out of every 1,000 babies born in the US suffers from FAS

Medical Journals and the CDC over the past few decades have concluded that there really is no such thing as a “safe level” of alcohol consumption during pregnancy 1
