Capacity and Self-Awareness

And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.”  – Luke 1: 41

1. The Bible says that when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby within  her womb (namely, John the Baptist) leaped for joy

2. Embryology has now firmly established that unborn babies have some degree of awareness within the womb

3. Recent research out of London College in England has demonstrated that babies between 28 and 35 weeks along in gestation are able to distinguish between mere feelings of touch vs. those bringing about pain

    • Studies were performed using electroencephalograms or EEG’s
    • Some studies actually conclude the time of self-awareness is far earlier than that 1

4. A whole field of study has arisen around how to help unborn babies develop within the womb

    • These include efforts to help the unborn baby learn and/or sooth him or her through the use of music or    other sounds
    • It has long been known that unborn babies seem to recognize the voice of their mothers and fathers 2
