Crustal Rock and Seawater

You must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.”              – II Peter 3: 3 – 6

According to the Bible, land was actually formed out of the seawater by the Lord

The earth is essentially a water planet

  • The land mass of the earth (i.e., part not covered by water) comprises 29% of the planet’s surface with an average altitude of 2,750 feet
  • The world’s oceans cover the remaining 71% of the planet with an average depth of 12,500 feet
  • If we were to place the continents within the oceans, the world would be covered by the seas with an average depth of about 8,000 feet 1

There are a few main reasons why the earth’s continents remain elevated above the seafloor:

  • The continents are comprised of rocks which are generally less dense than those found at the seafloor
  • The continental crust is generally twice the thickness of the oceanic crust
  • These factors lead to a pressing down of the sea on the oceanic crust and a rising up as it were by the land masses 2

All of the elements needed to form the earth’s crust are found in seawater 3

The chemical composition of the earth’s crust consists heavily of the elements noted in the list above 4

This chart represents a detailed composition of the elements founds within seawater 5

  • The red arrows on this chart are pointing to the primary elements found within the earth’s crust 6
  • Every one of the elements or compounds found on the chart showing the chemical composition of the earth’s crust is found on the chart representing the chemistry of seawater
  • The Scripture is accurate with respect to its chemistry and geology
