  • 1903 AD: Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first powered, sustained, and controlled flight in a heavier-than-air flying machine

3. Prior to that, the history of air flight was gradual at best, with periodic advancements taking place separated by centuries

  • 1000 BC – Chinese invent the kite
  • 1250 AD –English cleric Roger Bacon first conceptualizes mechanical flight
  • 1485 AD – Italian inventor Leonardo da Vinci drafts theoretical designs for flying machines and parachutes
  • 1709 AD – Portuguese cleric Bartolomeu Laurenço de Gusmao designs the first model glider
  • 1783 AD – French brothers by the name of Montgolfier invent the hot air balloon 1
