Two Verses Defining the Course of Human History
“I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.“ – Genesis 12: 2-3
God made this promise to Abraham some 2100 years before Christ was born. By extension, this promise also included Abraham’s descendants (through the Children of Israel). There were four facets to this promise – to this prophecy:
- God would make Abraham into a great nation
- God would bless Abraham and make his name great
- God would bless those who bless Abraham (and his descendants) and cursethose who curse Abraham (and his descendants)
- All the families of the world would be blessed as a result of Abraham (and his descendants)
Did God make Abraham into a great nation? Clearly! His descendants are the Nation of Israel –the Jewish People.
Did God bless Abraham and make his name great? Again there can be no doubt – Abraham isrevered by the Christian, the Jew and the Muslim alike.
Does God provide for those who bless Abraham (and by extension his descendants) and punish those who curse Abraham and his descendants?
Are all the families of the world blessed as a result of Abraham and his Offspring?
